We’re all bound to make our fair share of mistakes.  Repeating them, however is unacceptable.

Better yet, let’s learn from “other people’s mistakes”.  A half dozen mistakes are listed below with a few course corrections for your consideration.

Learn from Mistakes

=========================================================

1.            One Issue Negotiations

- Assures a win-lose scenario

- Nothing to “trade”

- Brainstorm additional issues

- Ask opponent to add issues

2.            Failing to “Just Ask”

- Asking is amazingly effective

-  Ask with courtesy

-  Ask early and often

-  Questions keep us in control

3.            Not Taking a Break

-  Make it a preplanned strategy

-  Almost always improves results

-  Even a momentary break works

-  Forces others to rethink their position

4.            Barney Fife “One Bullet” Approach

- Use multiple influence strategies

- Be prepared in advance

- Practice in “low risk” situations

5.            Take Things Personally

- It’s just bargaining, give and take

- Uncontrolled emotions limit effectiveness

- Remain calm even when others won’t

- Filter our proposals through the

perspectives of others

6.            Failing to Sell Value First

- It’s the NUMBER ONE MISTAKE of all time

- Add legitimacy (putting things in print) to

your value proposition

- Easy when “face to face”, possible with phone

negotiations too!

- Isn’t it time to “get your stuff together”?
